Things I Love #58

What a week! I've definitely been experiencing a low after the ridiculous high of bout weekend.  I also suddenly have all this free time and I'm not sure what to do with it!!  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining but seriously, now that life is back to a normal pace, I'm going to have to adjust a bit.  Crazy right?  Anyway, on to other things:

First up, DeviantArt user TsaoShin has re-imagined Grumpy Cat as various Disney characters.  My favourite is Grumpy Cat as Jasmine from Aladdin!!

Andreas Englund has an ongoing series of oil paintings called Aging Superhero that is both gorgeous and a little bit sad.

And on the subject of superheroes, check out this series of noir superhero illustrations by Marko Manev.

The Pugsession

I am in the midst of a huge Pug obsession, hence the Pugsession title.  I have always wanted a dog with a squishy face and for ages my breed of choice was an English Bulldog.  Then it was a Boston Terrier.  Then a French Bulldog.  And now, Pugs.   I want ALL OF THE PUGS.  Anyway, I was browsing Pinterest in search of pictures of my future dog when I stumbled across this video:

 

Adorable right?  Future pug will definitely have an Avengers outfit or two.

Things I Love #52

It's a long weekend in these parts and it couldn't have come at a better time.  I can't tell you guys how awesome it feels knowing that I don't have to get up tomorrow morning and face traffic and work and, and, and...want to know what else is awesome?  The fact that I got my very first birthday present this weekend.  My friend Collette sent my gift down to Durban with her sister AND gave me permission to open it straight away.  She knows me too well, there is no way on earth I would've been able to wait until my actual birthday!!  I got a Darth Vader Torch, a Spongebob t-shirt and a 30th badge which I apparently have to wear on my actual birthday...thanks Chicken, you're the best!

How cool are these snack-inspired beanbags?  I love the pancake ones and the ice-cream cone!

Things I Love #51

This weekend has been my first peaceful weekend in like a month.  It was so nice to get out, get some sun and not feel guilty about impending essay deadlines or whatnot.  Here's what I loved on the internet this week:

How cool is this shark onesie?  Actually it's called a Sharkini and I'm not sure I'd really wear it but I like the idea.

I included some of the new Black Milk Harry Potter range on my birthday wishlist but really I want them all.  Check out the full range here.

J.K. Rowling is writing a Harry Potter spin-off movie.  I am cautiously optimistic about this particular piece of news.  

And keeping with the Harry Potter theme, can someone please make me these house tie cookies?  Pretty please?

Things I Love #49

Happy Spring guys!!  I am so excited about the end of winter it's a little bit ridiculous.  I am excited for less layers, potential water world visits and the ability to wear the other half of my closet.  Also, it's my birthday in a month and eleven days...the big 3-oh.  Very excited to celebrate even if it is the end of a decade!  Now, on to this week's list:

Finally got my hands on The Ocean At The End Of The Lane...yay!

Funko are adding to their Adventure Time range with Fionna, Cake, Gunter, PB, Lemongrab and BMO.  I can't decide which ones I want more....leaning towards PB and BMO right now.

18 Ways Adventure Time is making you a better person.  I can think of more the 18 but this is a good start.

And my last Adventure Time link for this week, here are the show's 28 best guest voice actors.  Quite surprised by some of these!

I don't wear heels but these Star Wars heels make my heart happy.  The Pantone ones are pretty cool too.

I am off to track down the band announcements for next year's Ramfest.  Considering they are bypassing Durban again despite a good response this year, I am secretly hoping the line-up sucks.  Or not...there's been rumour that Biffy Clyro are coming to our part of the world.  I'll forgive them if it's Biffy. 

Things I Love #41

What a cool weekend it has been - mexican food with friends, two awesome dogs to play with, the Durban July and Wakaberry with Sam!  All that goodness makes it just a little bit harder to go into work tomorrow *sigh*  Anyway, after 3 weeks (I think) of no Things I Love, I have quite a collection of links/pictures/randomness to share with you today:

Today I had Wakaberry for the first time in months!!  They had peanut butter flavour and speckled eggs which is officially my new favourite combination.

How beautiful are these abandoned places?  Out of all of them I'd choose to explore Nara Dreamland in Japan (#30), the Maunsell Sea Forts in England (#14) and the fishing hut in Germany (#6).

Things I Love #39

Its been a pretty slow week for me so I'm afraid I don't have too many things to share on this week's Things I Love.  Unless you have a strange desire to read journal articles on the diaspora and the difference between exile and migrant writing?  No?  Are you sure?  Okay then, moving along:

Humans of Durban is a photo collection inspired by Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York blog.  It's a pretty nifty way to see all the different people that make up my home town.  Check out their Facebook page here.

Iceland is one of my dream destinations.  I love how it looks so raw and unfinished.  A real work in progress.  Killian Schoenberger has some breathtaking landscape pictures of Iceland that make me want to go tomorrow!!

So rumour has it that there is a Fables movie in the works.  Not too sure what to think about that to be honest.  I only discovered Fables last year when my friend Clare kindly lent me some of hers and i'd be devasted to see it done poorly.  Same goes for the rumours about the HBO adaptation of American Gods!!

PowerUp Collage makes art from upcycled comic boooks and it's fantastically cool!  One thing that has always endeared me to comics are the awesome sound effects so I'd love to own a few of these.

Excel is the bane of my existence.  Seriously, when people at work come and ask me for help with their spreadsheet or worse, to create an Excel template, I want to hide under my desk.  That's why I find this Excel artwork by Tatsuo Horiuchi so impressive.

I love these pictures of Rain Frogs on Buzzfeed.  I feel like they capture the way I've been feeling this week perfectly!!

Things I Love #33

Well, lets just jump straight into things I love this week...I just booked tickets to the Stars of the Russian Ballet at the Playhouse Opera Theatre in June.  I have missed them the last two times they were out here so I'm extra excited!!  Now, onto other internet (and real life) goodness from this week:

Check out the very awesome new Skeleton Labbits from Kidrobot and Frank Kozik.  I like the names the best - Somethings Under the Bed and Frightmare!

Here's a peek at The Great Gatsby soundtrack...I am curious to see how it fits with the aesthetic of the movie but it does look pretty good.

This is a very interesting (and open ended) conversation on cultural appropriation.  While I don't agree with everything that was said, it definitely made me thing.

Apparently April the 13th was National Scrabble Day!  The Daily Beast celebrated with this poem to remember all 101 two-letter words!!

BMO is getting his own Funko Pop Vinyl toy!!  In other Adventure Time news, Finn, Jake and Marceline should be shipping this week.  Can't wait!

Things I Love #28

This week's Things I Love is an autopost because right now we are somewhere between Berg and Durban on our way home from Collette's wedding.  I am sure I will have plenty to say about that in another post so I am just going to jump straight into this week's list:

First up, have you seen Amanda Fucking Palmer's TED talk on the Art of Asking.  While she is specifically talking about the music industry she makes some pretty interesting and universally relevant points:

I would absolutely LOVE to own this Star Wars x Adventure Time poster.  It is all kinds of perfection.

Another awesome Etsy find?  These bird skull earrings.  I saw the on The Dainty Squid blog and now I can't stop thinking about them.  

Trying to Be Thinner to Make up for Everything Else.  A very interesting read.

These macro photos of starfish just blow me away.  Sometimes nature is so much more stunning than we can imagine.

The Mugs of Pugs tumblr is my new favourite site.  So many pugs!!

Star Wars characters as vegetables.  This made my day when I saw it.

This LEGO coffee mug from Think Geek would make my morning coffee so much more exciting.  Plus it would provide endless diversions in boring meetings.

Right now I am coveting this jacket and this polka dot top from Mr Price.

And while we are on the topic of clothing stores, I had a good look around Cotton On in Pavillion on Saturday and I suspect it might become my new favourite store - reasonably priced and tons of pretty things.  

I have always wanted to visit Iceland.  Everything about it looks so dramatic and these amazing aerial photos are no different.  

I really enjoyed this Salon article about writing.  I love the Robert Frost quote at the beginning "...a momentary stay against confusion."

We've been completely overwhelmed with coverage about the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp but I found this Times article uncomfortably accurate.  Definitely something to think about.

Things I Love #25

Let's pretend that today is Sunday and I didn't forget to post Things I Love shall we?  Although pretending today is Sunday makes tomorrow another Monday and that's not exactly a good idea either.  To be honest, I didn't actually forget.  My brother-in-law was here from Chicago for a few days and it was a crazy, crazy, busy week and we needed all of yesterday to recover.  It was a fun visit though and totally worth the exhaustion that has followed!  Anyway, enough rambling, here is Things I Love #25:

South Africa is currently hosting the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.  Last night Bafana Bafana played Morocco and drew which earned us a quarter-final place for the first time since 2000.  Big, awesome news!!

Scotland really knows how to get people like me to visit - put cute, fat ponies into jerseys.  Super cute.  Here's a video of those cute, fat ponies being put into their jerseys...I die from the cuteness:

Paris is a beautiful city.  Here are some awesome colour photos from 1914 to prove it, including a picture of the Moulin Rouge.

This Totoro bed tutorial is awesome and, by the looks of it, quite easy to do.  I want one.  Now to convince Jason!

While we're on the subject of DIYs, this Spike Comb tutorial from Honestly WTF is next on my list.  Check out the rest of the site too, there are tons of great DIYs and just all round interesting stuff.

The Daily Bunny is one of my favourite sites ever.  Mostly because it provides me with a daily dose of bunny cuteness.  They recently did a two part GIF dump full of super cute images. This one is my favourite:

I love this quiz from The Vulture that makes you pick between Jay-Z lyrics and lines from The Great Gatsby.  I'm proud to report that while I know nothing about Jay-Z, I really do know my Gatsby.  I'd also like to add that despite my initial concerns about Jay-Z writing part of the score, I really do think it's a good fit.

Would you look at this awesome Life Buoy Handwash campaign called You Eat What You Touch.  The pug loaf and the hamster cupcake are my favourites!

Eventually winter will return to Durban so I am keeping my eyes peeled for interesting tights.  Like these ones from Nylon Journal which feature a New York City Subway map.  Or these Middle Earth themed ones from Black Milk Clothing.

The other day I made the mistake of googling sad pugs and was nearly overwhelmed by the cuteness.  Here are 35 sad pugs (in costumes!!!!!) so you can see what I mean.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company has released a Single Malt Scotch Whisky that features a Velociraptor fighting a shark on the label.  Can we say awesome?  If I drank whisky, this would be my whisky of choice.

Ever wondered how people writing period novels get the language right?  Well this author has created a Jane Austen Word List to assist with her latest novel.  This is such a cool idea.

This clip is actually a music video for a song called Little Octopus by Parry Grip.  I mostly like it because it has a teeny, tiny octopus climbing over a rock:

I haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom yet (sadly) but I am still intrigued by this beautiful pdf version of the screenplay featuring illustrations and shots from the movie.  Now to resist reading it until after I see the movie.

Oh Bulldogs, why are you so cute?  Just look at these 1905 pictures of Bulldogs in fancy dress.  I'd also  like to take this moment to apologize to my future outfit wearing dogs.  It'll be the internet's fault.

Dogs in Costume

While scrolling through this site the other day, I came to the conclusion that I will be one of those people who dresses their dogs up.  I can just see our future dog dressed like a Star Wars character or a super hero.  And the best part, I am not even ashamed.  In fact, I am planning ahead:

Things I Love #19

Wow, this has been a long, long, looooong week.  Work has been extra busy and I felt like I was running on empty all week.  After two days of the worst headaches and a little sore throat, I decided to just take it easy this weekend which has been awesome.  Especially seeing as the weather has been less than great.  Anyway, somewhere in the midst of the business, I still managed to put together a fairly decent list for Things I Love #19:

The Gue(ho)st House is a huge architectural sculputre outside of the Delme Contempory Art Centre is France.  Its pretty amazing.

Striped Icebergs in Antartica.  The things nature can do astound me!

Someone keeps swiping my coffee mug at work.  I really need to get one of these perpetually dirty mugs. Gross but effective!

CLOUD is an interactive sculpture by Caitlind r.c. Brown.  Its made from 6000 lightbulbs - 1000 working ones and another 5000 burnt out ones.  Its gorgeous:

Something similar and equally amazing is the Artificial Moon by Wang Yuyang.  What I wouldn't give to have both of these in my home.

Inside Insides is a blog full of animated MRI scans of vegetables and plants.  It's definitely worth a look.

These stone sculptures by Hirotoshi Itoh are quirky and unusual and again, I wish I could have a few in my home.

The Heidelberg Project was started 26 years ago by Tyree Guyton.  He decorated the houses in his neighbourhood with paint and various objects collected on the street and in the process, turned the area into a tourist attraction.  Talk about using your art for good!

These old school ads would be pretty funny if they weren't so distrubing.  I am so glad we have moved on...

This stop-motio crochet octopus is too cute for words.  The video was put together for Wax Tailor as a music video and took over three months to film.

My Dog: The Paradox is a comic from The Oatmeal which totally captures dog ownership.  It also makes me wish for a dog so much...sigh...one day...

I wish that someone would make me this Ewok Bento Box for lunch tomorrow...it would totally make my Monday.

Another things that would make my Monday, or rather my everyday if I owned it, is this super cute Totoro Phone Stand.  Want!!

I must be honest, I've had a bit of a poop day today.  There are things that frustrate me no end at the moment and I can't really work out if I am justified in feeling this way or just being petty.  Anyway, when I got home, I logged into my Google Reader to find this amazing bulldog clip on Little Chief Honeybee:
