Things I Love #39

Its been a pretty slow week for me so I'm afraid I don't have too many things to share on this week's Things I Love.  Unless you have a strange desire to read journal articles on the diaspora and the difference between exile and migrant writing?  No?  Are you sure?  Okay then, moving along:

Humans of Durban is a photo collection inspired by Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York blog.  It's a pretty nifty way to see all the different people that make up my home town.  Check out their Facebook page here.

Iceland is one of my dream destinations.  I love how it looks so raw and unfinished.  A real work in progress.  Killian Schoenberger has some breathtaking landscape pictures of Iceland that make me want to go tomorrow!!

Dirty Royal played another gig at Amsterdam on Friday night.  Here are some photos:

So rumour has it that there is a Fables movie in the works.  Not too sure what to think about that to be honest.  I only discovered Fables last year when my friend Clare kindly lent me some of hers and i'd be devasted to see it done poorly.  Same goes for the rumours about the HBO adaptation of American Gods!!

I love these photos of Hunter S. Thompson just sitting around.  He is one of my favourites.

PowerUp Collage makes art from upcycled comic boooks and it's fantastically cool!  One thing that has always endeared me to comics are the awesome sound effects so I'd love to own a few of these.

Please, please, please can someone send me these Stars Wars Light Up Lightsabre sunglasses?  Too cool and if Hot Topic didn't require me to sell a limb to afford their international shipping, I'd buy them this instant!!

Excel is the bane of my existence.  Seriously, when people at work come and ask me for help with their spreadsheet or worse, to create an Excel template, I want to hide under my desk.  That's why I find this Excel artwork by Tatsuo Horiuchi so impressive.

I love these pictures of Rain Frogs on Buzzfeed.  I feel like they capture the way I've been feeling this week perfectly!!

I am in love with these birds illustrated on vintage envelopes by Mark Powell.  Just gorgeous.

Things I Love #36

So, tomorrow I have my last lecture of my first semester back at university!  Crazy right?  June is going to be full of essays and studying and exams so I am going to make the most of what's left of May!  In other news...I have no other news really so here's this weeks list:

Here's a rather old Time interview (2005!!) with Neil Gaiman and Joss Whedon.  What a great combination.

These Angelique Houtkamp necklaces are so, so beautiful!  I just wish they were more within my price range because then I would have this one, this one and this one.

Have you read Angeline Jolie's NY Times op-ed yet?  I totally support her choice and I think it's an incredibly brave move especially in light of what she does and what she represents.

The Mary Sue got an exclusive look at the covers for Adventure Time Candy Capers #2 and they are super cool!  They also got a sneak preview of Fionna and Cake #5.

Dirty Royal played their first show at Live - The Venue last night and it was awesome.  They opened for Dance You're On Fire who were pretty great as well:

Things I Love #27

This past week has been a good one.  We got our car back, I had my first lecture and thing just generally seem to be going well.  Yay!  Here's what I've been loving just recently:

My new Star Wars necklace from this awesome Etsy seller.  Not only do I love my Darth Vader cameo but I also got a bonus pair of pistol earrings!

On the subject of Adventure Time, how great are these Finn and Jake Headphones?  I'd definitely buy one but how would I choose?!

The Comic Book Resources site has another preview of the True Live of the Fabulous Killoys art.  I can't even explain to you guys how excited I am to see this series!

I LOVE the I am Stay Puft Ladies Tank Top from Think Geek.  It fulfills my need for nerdy clothing and it has a nautical feel - two birds, one stone.

I came across this great article on Buzzfeed featuring 98 Concept Sketches from Miyazaki movies.  Too perfect!

And right under that article was a link to this one - Hayao Miyazaki's Films as LEGOs.

Working full-time and studying part-time means I really, really need to learn some time management and organisation this year.  One of my very favourite bloggers Kyla Roma has given us a peak at her 2013 planner and a free download...awesome!

These images from Ben Heine's Camera vs Pencil project are great.  My favourite is the fishing one at the top.

The Jerkface Typewriter just makes me laugh.  Follow the link for some illustrated insults from an old-school typewriter.

Plasticine Tattooine gives a voice to some of the lesser known Star Wars characters and, as an added bonus, makes all the characters out of Plasticine!

I think I have fallen in love with the Rockets and Rainbows Esty store...so many awesome pieces!  Also on Esty, the Jolie Petite Deco store has the most amazing kawaii cases.  So tempted to order one...

I have such love for weird monsters/creatures which is why these images and plushies by Simon Le Roux caught my eye.  You can view her full portfolio here.

Maybe I'm just juvenile but the Poop Lamp by Diana Dumitrescu just makes me laugh.  I think it would  make the perfect night light!

I absolutely adore this Bird in Hand light.  Using the shadow puppet concept, all the hands in this light are positioned so that the shadows look like fling birds. 

Alison Anselot's combination of food and Pantone colours makes me wish all food was presented like this.  It also makes me hungry...

This Deviant Art Gallery belongs to Hillary White and it's pretty much perfect!

And last but not least, here are some macro photographs of soap bubbles.  The article likens them to alien planets and I couldn't agree more.

Things To Look Forward To In 2013

There is a whole lot happening this year that I am really, really excited about so I thought I would let you in on a few:

Studying:  In October last year I applied to do my Honours in English part-time.  There has been a bit of a bugger up with my application so I am really hoping this is still an option for me this year.  Please keep your fingers crossed!

New Biffy Clyro:  If you haven't heard Biffy Clyro yet, you need to go and listen to them immediately!  I recommend starting with The Captain off of Only Revolutions.  They have a new album called Opposites due out this month and I am really looking forward to hearing it!  Here's the first single, Black Chandelier:

Colli's Wedding:  One of my bestest bests is getting married in March to an awesome guy and I get to be her Maid of Honour.  I am so excited to be able to share in their happiness and to catch up with old friends.

Rise Against and RAMfest:  You guys must be so tired of hearing me go on about this but I couldn't be more excited about the fact that Rise Against are actually playing in my city and we already have tickets for it!  Just thinking about it makes me want to play every album I own and jump around our flat!!

Adventure Time Funko Pop Vinyl:  I have mentioned these before but I am still desperately awaiting a release date or an option to pre-order the awesome Funko Pop Adventure Time figurines.  I neeeeeeed Marceline in my life.

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys:  My Chemical Romance is my favourite band of all time.  Really, all the rest are a distant second to these guys.  Anyway, in 2010 they released an album called Danger Days:  The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.  The comic book tie-in for this album is a collaboration between Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan and it's finally being released in June this year!  Seriously, if anyone can get me a copy of the preview that will be released on Free Comic Book day, I would be the happiest person ever!  Check out this interview with Gerard Way to get a sneak peak at the artwork.  Also awesome?  The fact that he is currently writing the third Umbrella Academy installment.  Happy days!!

Turning 30:  This is a weird one because I always thought I would have major issues with turing 30 but as it stands right now, I am kind of looking forward to it.  Time will tell whether it becomes an issue closer to the time but I really hope it doesn't.  Everyone says that when you turn 30 you care less about the little stuff, you become more comfortable with yourself etcetera, etcetera.  While I don't assume these things just happen magically over night, anything that makes me less anxious about everything is a good thing!
