Sound City

SI mentioned the other day how cool Dave Grohl’s Sound City documentary and now, as promised, a slightly longer review/whatever you’d like to call it.

First of all some background, Sound City is or rather was, a studio in Van Nuys, California that closed in 2011.  Hidden in an industrial area in Van Nuys, California, it was by all accounts, a bit of a dump – think unpainted walls, dirty couches and general scruffiness.  Yet somehow, the artists that recorded there and the studio itself are legendary.  Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours there and a young Nirvana picked Sound City above all other studios to record Nevermind.  So what was the draw card?  According to Grohl and the rest of the musicians he interviews it was a combination of the sense of family and the Neve analogue mixing console.

While the documentary does touch on the technical aspects of the Neve Desk it’s more about the people and the stories / music that was made there.  When the studio closed in 2011 Dave Grohl managed to buy the Neve Desk (which cost more than the owners house when it was installed) and move it to his own studio.  Here he sets out to recreate the Sound City vibe by inviting a whole bunch of musicians back to record an album in its memory.  He even gets Paul MacCartney involved in a track including former Nirvana band mates Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic.

Part of the reason that Sound City closed was the fact that the owners vehemently opposed the switch to digital recording.  Sound City remained an analogue studio until the day they closed the doors.  It made me think about what is lost in the switch from analogue to digital, not just in music but in other forms of media too – books, comics and all the rest.  For me, part of the pleasure of a new album, book or comic is holding a physical object in my hand - the smell of a new book, the feel of paper in my hands or the artwork and lyrics inside the album sleeve.  For the guys who recorded at Sound City, it was the “human element that made the magic.”
I am not knocking digital media at all.  The advantages are obvious and 90% of my music and all most all my comics are now digital.  Digital formats allow us to access more, faster and easier than ever before and that is great.  I’d just like it a lot more if there was room in the world for both.  I’d prefer not to watch music stores and book stores close down because those places, like Sound City, create communities around art forms that we are all passionate about and for me, no virtual store can ever take that place.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, Sound City is well worth a watch especially if you are music fan.  Whether you are like Jason who knows the in's and out's of being a musician in a studio or like me who just loves the end product, you’ll find something here that speaks to you.  If you do watch it or already have watched it, let me know what you think.

P.S The album that Dave Grohl produced in his studio with the Neve desk is due out this month sometime and I am really looking forward to giving it a listen.

Quilting Meets Movies

On Saturday I went to the KwaZulu Natal Quilters Guild meeting with my mom.   I can’t quilt to save my life but my mom has a stand there and it’s usually a fun morning out.  There are tons of vendors, tea and scones and a quilt exhibition.  During some downtime, I went with my dad to take a look at the exhibition only to find the most amazing display based on Movies and movie directors.  These quilts are all part of a joint project between South African, French and Japanese quilters.  Initiated by Marie-Jose Michel from France, the concept was to create a quilt or a piece of fibre art inspired by or based on the work of a particular director.  The organisers chose five movie directors from each participating country and another 15 directors from around the world.  Here are a few of my favourites:

Hayao Miyazaki

The Pigness in Us All - Kathryn Harmer Fox (South Africa)
This one in particular blew me away.  The photo doesn’t do justice to the level of details and texture in this piece.  Also the likeness is almost exact!

Chihiro's Voyage - Alida Cantereau (France)
This is inspired by my second favourite Miyazaki movie and is pretty much an exact replica of the poster.

Alfred Hitchcock

Birds - Frederique Cretal (France)
I didn't manage to get a good photo of my favourite Hitchcock one but this one is just as good and clearly inspired by Birds.

Alain Resnais

Hiroshima Revisited - Phil Fisher (South Africa)
I watched Hiroshima Mon Amour at varsity in my film class and out of all the movies we watched it still stands out.  I was really glad to see this one included.

Jacques Tati

Mr Hulot's Holiday - Chantel Desrues (France)
This is the man that insprired Mr Bean.

Kaige Chen

Farewell my Concubine - Izumi Takamori (Japan)
I am not familiar with this director at all but I found this one so striking that I had to include it!

I wish this exhibition was up for longer than just Saturday because it was well worth a look and it proves just how much of an art form quilting really is.

Things I Love # 10

This week's Things I Love starts off with the The Bark Side ad from Volkswagen.  I realise this isn't exactly new but it is new to me and I think it's just awesome:

The Hello Kitty Beauty Spa.  I'd spend some money here...

This origami street art is gorgeous.  I admire people who have the time and vision to do things like this.

The Neon Museum Boneyard in Las Vegas.  I saw this link on the Lucky Pony blog and it's officially added to my list of places to visit.

My Grandmere had the most amazing collection of little boxes that I used spend many hours playing with when I was younger.  She passed away recently and my mom and dad brought me a few as keep sakes.  I love them and I love the memories they bring back:

Pet Jellyfish….I'd love to have one of these.

I present 3 awesome ways to waste some time:  Attack of the Cute (the most amazing small, squishy animal pics), Dear Blank Please Blank and the very aptly named I Waste So Much Time.

Awesome porcelain boxes designed to look like they are overflowing.

This adequately describes my To Do lists.

Gorgeous and colourful art by Emmanuel Malin.

The awesome things you can do with tape and nail polish:

This tentacle doorstop is too cool, definitely need one...

These amazingly nerdy skirts on Etsy.

What if Doctor Suess wrote Star Wars? Well now you can find out.

The Django Unchained trailer:

Superhero Saints.  This probably won’t appeal to everyone but I like the combination of religious art and superheroes.

Speaking of superhero art, these cubist illustrations by Liam Brazier are pretty amazing.

Brain Cupcakes…kind of weird, kind of cool.

This Boombox cabinet.  Love it.

And also, this chair that holds books.  Perfection!

The art of Jeremy Geddes…amazing.

This article about using undictionaried words was pretty interesting.

And finally, the awesome Misko Mini Owls:

Things I Love #9

I am currently working on an assignment that is due in tomorrow so I have cleverly scheduled this post instead of trying to squeeze everything in.  With any luck I am actually done with it already and lazing on the couch.  Anyway, todays list starts with:

The Happy Labbits Mini Series by Frank Kozik and Kidrobot.  This description is all the convincing I need:  "If you like blowing bubbles, eating ice cream, or have a thing for swashbuckling buns, you'll love these merry mustachioed mammals." I desperately want this little guy, mostly because of the anchor:

Jason Every Design aka the husband’s website has just had an upgrade and is looking very slick.  Check it out here.

I am marginally obsessed with Text from Dog.  October Jones gets texts from his dog and they are hilarious.  If this site doesn’t make you laugh and wish to own a smart mouthed bulldog then nothing will.

Filthy Luker street art.  This stuff is amazing!!

This Apollo Mission Necklace from The Science Boutique on Etsy.  Definitely adding this store to my favourites!

This skull chair is fantastic!  I would like it in my house please.

Along with these super cool triangular shelves.

Lego Moleskine notebooks.  Clearly you are never too old to own Lego.

The Die Young illustration series by Ben Brown.  Colourful and creepy.

The Great Gatsby trailer…I can't begin to explain how much I want to see this movie!

This amazing embroidery art by Hendrik Stroebel.  I helped my mom out at the KZNQG and they had a talk about this guy.  He is amazing.  If you are in Durban in November, he is having a solo show at the KZNSA.  Who knew that embroidery could be this fascinating!

My gorgeous Lady of the Sea necklace arrived in the post.  I love it!  The service from Cinsational Baubles was amazingly fast and I will definitely be ordering another one ASAP!

Frankenweenie poster!!  Can’t wait to see this.

Apple and Beetroot juice from Woolworths.  Its super yummy and the colour is so vibrant.

Wookie the Chew.  This is beyond cool and appeals to my childhood love of Pooh Bear and my lifelong obsession love for Star Wars.

Things I Love #7

The last few weeks have been rather strange.  I've been feeling a bit out of sorts and not quite like myself. Luckily that hasn't stopped me from finding cool things on the internet!  In all seriousness though, I am hoping that this week everything will be back to normal and I'll find the time and the motivation to write the blog posts swimming in my head.  In the meantime, here is Things I Love #7 to tide you over:

Totoro Nail Art.  I wish I had the time and patience to paint my nails like this!

source
Woolworths Vanilla Chai Tea.  I have a box of this at work and I have been drinking it daily.  Sometimes twice a day.  It has cinammon, vanilla and cardamon in it.  Yum!

Jaws Vs Jaws.  This print is awesome!  I'd love to have it in our flat.

Classic Literary Novels starring you.  This company adds your name to classic stories for a small fee.  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly tempted to do this.

Even the birds love our new car!  Seriously, it's shaped like a heart.  Also, this is bound to be the strangest picture on this blog.

Laser Cut Sushi.  Looks too cool to eat though...

source
The Cactus Couch.  We have been looking everywhere for a new couch that will actually fit into our flat.  Pity we cant get this one.

The Bella Morte Collection from this Esty store.  So many cameos!  My favourite is the anatomical heart!

Rolo eating toast.  I suspect this is why he is getting so fat!

We have seen the Avengers twice in the last week once in 2D and once in 3D.  Needless to say we loved it just as much the second time round.

And staying on the subject, here is some awesome Avengers inspired eye make-up.

And my new Avengers Assemble sweatshirt from the little boys section in Mr Price.

Here are 33 animals who are very disappointed in you.  And another 25 ones who are feeling a bit existential.  I swear if the internets sole purpose was photos of cute animals I would be okay with that!

We've recently started watching Heroes again from the beginning.  It's still awesome!

I would like this Tokidoki chair please.

This article about Facebook and this article about handwriting were pretty interesting.

Comic book inspired fashion anyone?  I've seen something similar for Spongebob as well but I couldn't find the link.

I really hope that the animated version of Axe Cop will be as cool as the comic.

Yesterday we went shopping for Lego of all things.  Needless to day I spent most of the time drooling over the Star Wars collection and playing with the Avengers merchandise...

These sculptures are pretty amazing.

I would LOVE one of these ninja watches.

Adventure Time t-shirts.  So cool!

And finally, my mom has a cute new kitten who needs a name!  Go check out his pics and leave a suggestion:)

Midnight in Paris & Happy New Year

source
Be careful!  This post may contain spoilers!!

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Woody Allen but when I saw the preview for Midnight in Paris, I knew I had to see it.  I am a sucker for the 1920’s, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Salvador Dali.   And the premise made the literary nerd in me jump for joy.                                                                         Basically, the story goes like this: Gil (Owen Wilson) is in Paris with his fiancĂ© and her family.  He is a screenwriter who is trying to make the transition to novels and has an utterly romantic view on life.  The movie opens with amazing shots of Paris and then Gil rhapsodising about how wonderful Paris would have been in the1920’s and in the rain.  Anyway, he eventually ends up taking a walk through the streets of Paris, and at midnight, he finds himself transported back in time to 1920’s Paris!  He meets Hemingway, Picasso, the Fitzgeralds and Gertrude Stein.  He drinks wine with Dali who is obsessed with rhinoceroses and jumps in a car with T.S Eliot.  I think if this had to happen to me, I would die with a smile on my face.
I really enjoyed this movie, it was witty and inspiring and made me think about all sorts of things; the past, how we always think we are born in the wrong time, about travelling and about writing.   If I didn’t love Paris before I am now dying to go back!  There are also some truly great lines in the movie, like this one from Gil:
"That's what the present is. It's a little unsatisfying because life is unsatisfying."
Or this one from Gertrude Stein:
"The artist's job is not to succumb to despair but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence."
If you don’t want to take my word for it, check out this review from Rolling Stone.

Anyway, this movie was just part of a fun morning out with a good friend.  She spoilt me with coffee from a little place called Larney’s.  Its attached to the Space store in Gateway and it’s just the right amount of quirky!  Check out the awesome cups:

This is my last post for 2011!  I can't believe we are on the threshold of another year.  I have a really good feeling about 2012 and I am excited to see what becomes of this little blog.
Happy New Years!!

PS.  The quotes above are from IMDB.  If you’ve seen the movie, let me know what you thought.
