When I was in standard 7 or 8, we had an English teacher who set us songs instead of more traditional poetry. That term, we studied Sugar Man, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Mr Tambourine Man. The idea was to teach us to think outside the box when it came to poetry. Honestly, I think it worked. To this day the bands I love the most are the ones with the meaningful lyrics, with the great combinations of words and the lines that I wish I had written.
I had my iPod on shuffle at work and Bloc Party’s On started playing. There’s a great line that goes “I am hopeful and stutter-free.” I love that line. It got me thinking…what other song lines get stuck in my head like that. After flicking through my iPod for a while, I came up with a list that I thought I’d share:
“ You are the smell before rain, You are the blood in my veins”
Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot
“It kicks like a sleep twitch”
Editors – Papillion
“Like a book elegantly bound but in a language you can’t read just yet”
Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart
“Two dullards finding their colours”
Aking – Against All Odds
“I’d rather be a comma than a full-stop”
Coldplay – Every Teardrop is a Waterfall
“The universe is full of black holes and anniversary nights”
Smashing Pumpkins – Rose March
Are there any lyrics that get stuck in your head like that? The kind that make you play the same song over and over and over?
PS. In a funnier side to the whole lyrics thing, yesterday I heard a song called Pacer by The Amps. I could have sworn the first line was “I like chicken love” but my husband assures me that it was “I like to get loud.” I think I like my version better:)
I can't think of any off the top of my head, at the moment, but I had to pop in and say that the Coldplay lyric you mentioned has always been one of my favorites, too. :)
