Things I Love #51

This weekend has been my first peaceful weekend in like a month.  It was so nice to get out, get some sun and not feel guilty about impending essay deadlines or whatnot.  Here's what I loved on the internet this week:

How cool is this shark onesie?  Actually it's called a Sharkini and I'm not sure I'd really wear it but I like the idea.

I included some of the new Black Milk Harry Potter range on my birthday wishlist but really I want them all.  Check out the full range here.

J.K. Rowling is writing a Harry Potter spin-off movie.  I am cautiously optimistic about this particular piece of news.

And keeping with the Harry Potter theme, can someone please make me these house tie cookies?  Pretty please?

There is such a thing as Hello Kitty Beer!!  It's fruity flavoured and adorably cute:

If you ever find yourself in Taiwan, you can stay in a Batman themed room.  Awesome.

These photos of Europe's jeweled skeletons are breathtaking and creepy all at once.

These Villan Affirmation Posters by Christopher Ables are super cool.  I especially like the Professor Snape one.

I may have posted this before but check out The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.  It's a pretty interesting read.

Look at my new phone cover...so perfect:

Label.M have released a Powder Pink Spray that temporarily turns your hair an awesome shade of pastel pink.  Must have.  Must.

I love this DIY Braided Hex Nut Bracelet from Honestly WTF.  Definitely on my list of things to try.

Wild Birds Flying is a stunning photo series by Paul Nelson.  It features high-speed shots of exactly what the name suggests - Wild Birds Flying.

Star Wars Spin-Offs Will Be Origin Stories.  I quite like this idea to be honest.  I'm hoping for a Boba Fett story..

Check out this super cool Lego art that I bought at yesterday's I Heart Market.  He was created by Big Kid Art who are new to the market and have tons of awesome pieces.  I could've easily walked away with 2 or 3 or 10:

A Curious Bestiary is original art by Kaitlin Beckett and it's the perfect combination of quirky and unusual.

25 Jokes Only Book Nerds Will Understand.  I must admit that I didn't get all of them...

And lastly, I leave you with PuppyCat's Fairy Tale from Bee and PuppyCat.

Seen anything you love this week?  Let me know in the comments:)

Things I Love #46

Another Sunday, another list of things I love.  We had a long weekend in this part of the world and, combined with a day of leave, I have been off for 4 days in a row!  Bliss!!

First on this week's list is the amazing cartoon depicting Hayao Miyazaki's philosophy on good and evil in films.  It's profound!

Have you heard of weird Twitter?  Me neither until I read this explanation.

The second episode of Bee and Puppycat is out.  Do yourself a favour and check out this awesomely quirky series, you won't be disappointed.

Check out Merilee Allred's The Awkward Years Project.  A good reminder that we all had an awkward phase...

Finn and Jake got a super short cameo appearance on Futurama:

Also check out this super awesome video of the Adventure Time intro made out of Lego!!

Star Wars toys made me who I am is an article in praise of action figures.

This spherical Jupiter cake is AMAZING.  Not sure I would feel right eating it though, it's too pretty.

Here are 24 Disney comebacks for every occasion.  I particularly love the first one.

How awesome is my new dinosaur bones necklace from Sass Diva?  I am in love..

Having a Face is my new favourite tumblr.  Faces on inanimate objects always make me smile...

Ever wondered what it costs to be a superhero?  Well check out the awesome The Price of Being Superheroes Infographics.

How awesome is this shark sushi plate?  I want...

And finally, sticking with sharks, here is a video of a cat dressed as a shark riding a Roomba (thanks Sam!!!)

I could watch that video for ages!!  Anyway, that's it for this week.  If you've seen anything you love this week then let me know in the comments:)

Things I Love #45

So I don't know about you guys but this has been a BUSY weekend:  Dirty Royal shows, weddings, lunches and a ton of reading for varsity (Confession: I am already behind).  Luckily we only have a three day week what with public holidays and leave.  I am looking forward to the mini-break.  Now, on to the things I loved this week:

How awesome does this Shark Week party on Little Chief Honeybee sound?  I'm going to keep this in my bookmarks for when Shark Week rolls around in South Africa.

On the topic of sharks, these photos of sharks with human teeth make me laugh.

How Selfies Became a Global Phenomenon is a pretty interesting read.

The Mary Sue has an interview with Olivia Olson, the voice of Marceline the Vampire Queen.

37 Things only Star Wars fans will find funny.  My favourite is number 29!

This week, my nails made me think of Gloomy Bear:

Mamelodi for a Month is a pretty interesting project where one middle class family will live in a shack in Mamelodi for a month.  They are doing it to highlight the circumstances of the majority of South Africans.

I love the Grammar Girl site, it helps me out at work more often than I care to admit.  Here is her take on Yoda Grammar.

These two-sentence horror stories are surprisingly creepy!

How great is this anti-chandelier made from 85 light bulbs.  I swear when we get our own place, the first thing I am buying us is a chandelier of some form.

I got hold of another Adventure Time game this week - Fionna Fights.  It's super simple but super awesome:

On the subject of games, Hipster Zombies looks pretty fun.  I love the tagline: Defend your neighborhood ironically.

I am totally drooling over these vintage dictionary art prints by Danielle Richey.

What if superheroes used Instagram?  I'm not sure but I know that I would follow ALL OF THEM!

And finally, how great are these ice cream flavours inspired by books?

Seen anything you love this week?  Let me know in the comments:)

Things I Love #26

This week has been quiet mostly.  Not having a car really puts a damper on things...no sushi, no lunchtime excursions and relying on lifts to get everywhere.  Hopefully we'll get the car back this week and things can return to normal.  In other news, after a long morning at the varsity yesterday, I am officially a registered student again.  My student card photo is awful but the fact that it says Postgrad kind of makes up for it.  My mom and dad are awesome for coming to fetch me at a ridiculous time and then sitting around waiting for me to finish..thanks guys.  Now on to other things I love...

Is personal technology the new rock n roll?  I don't think so but this was still an interesting read.

Funko Pop have a new range that combines Domo with DC characters - Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and Superman.  How awesome?  My favourite is Domo Flash:

source
Have any of you watched Air Jaws?  Its the one where the sharks attack the seals by diving out of the water.  Well, the other day, a Fur Seal got his revenge!  Photographers caught the seal eating 5 Blue Sharks off Cape Point.  Not for the faint-hearted.

I am an adult that likes kid's stuff and that's okay.  Loved this article on The Mary Sue!!

Check out these awesome Tattoo Wood Carvings by Bryn Perott.  I love the two arms the most.

Also from The Mary Sue, I Know That Feel Bro - pop culture icons that feel each other's pain.

The Upside of Distraction proves that sometime distraction is a good thing.  Nice to hear when you're like me and battle to focus for too long.

We went to watch the very awesome Van Coke Kartel on Friday night.  It was a fun, fun night.

Daily Dishonesty is an awesome project by a hungry graphic designer.  These beautifully illustrated lies  are one's we're all guilty of.  Originally seen on the Happiness Is blog...one of my favourites.

The Daily Otter provides you with a daily dose of otter cuteness.  From the makers of the Daily Bunny.

I am coveting this shirt from the Orphan's Arms.  So nice.

These melting tights are the best.  I've seen a few DIY's online which I am thinking of trying.  I'll keep you posted.

Speaking of DIY's and tights, here is an awesome DIY for Batgirl Tights.

Death Star Lollipops...could there be anything more perfect.  I wish they'd survive the trip out here.

The new Internet Explorer marketing campaign is excellent.  Check it out here.

Luke Jerram makes glass replica's of harmful viruses and bacteria.  Pretty creepy.

Itswhatiminto has an awesome look at the Homeward Bound show which takes place alongside the Cape Town Tattoo Convention (South Ink Xposure).  Maybe next year I can be there in person...that would be nice.

Speaking of the tattoo convention, here is a  little video from the Mail & Guardian:

Things I Love #25

Let's pretend that today is Sunday and I didn't forget to post Things I Love shall we?  Although pretending today is Sunday makes tomorrow another Monday and that's not exactly a good idea either.  To be honest, I didn't actually forget.  My brother-in-law was here from Chicago for a few days and it was a crazy, crazy, busy week and we needed all of yesterday to recover.  It was a fun visit though and totally worth the exhaustion that has followed!  Anyway, enough rambling, here is Things I Love #25:

South Africa is currently hosting the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.  Last night Bafana Bafana played Morocco and drew which earned us a quarter-final place for the first time since 2000.  Big, awesome news!!

Scotland really knows how to get people like me to visit - put cute, fat ponies into jerseys.  Super cute.  Here's a video of those cute, fat ponies being put into their jerseys...I die from the cuteness:

Paris is a beautiful city.  Here are some awesome colour photos from 1914 to prove it, including a picture of the Moulin Rouge.

This Totoro bed tutorial is awesome and, by the looks of it, quite easy to do.  I want one.  Now to convince Jason!

While we're on the subject of DIYs, this Spike Comb tutorial from Honestly WTF is next on my list.  Check out the rest of the site too, there are tons of great DIYs and just all round interesting stuff.

The Daily Bunny is one of my favourite sites ever.  Mostly because it provides me with a daily dose of bunny cuteness.  They recently did a two part GIF dump full of super cute images. This one is my favourite:

I love this quiz from The Vulture that makes you pick between Jay-Z lyrics and lines from The Great Gatsby.  I'm proud to report that while I know nothing about Jay-Z, I really do know my Gatsby.  I'd also like to add that despite my initial concerns about Jay-Z writing part of the score, I really do think it's a good fit.

Would you look at this awesome Life Buoy Handwash campaign called You Eat What You Touch.  The pug loaf and the hamster cupcake are my favourites!

Eventually winter will return to Durban so I am keeping my eyes peeled for interesting tights.  Like these ones from Nylon Journal which feature a New York City Subway map.  Or these Middle Earth themed ones from Black Milk Clothing.

The other day I made the mistake of googling sad pugs and was nearly overwhelmed by the cuteness.  Here are 35 sad pugs (in costumes!!!!!) so you can see what I mean.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company has released a Single Malt Scotch Whisky that features a Velociraptor fighting a shark on the label.  Can we say awesome?  If I drank whisky, this would be my whisky of choice.

Ever wondered how people writing period novels get the language right?  Well this author has created a Jane Austen Word List to assist with her latest novel.  This is such a cool idea.

This clip is actually a music video for a song called Little Octopus by Parry Grip.  I mostly like it because it has a teeny, tiny octopus climbing over a rock:

I haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom yet (sadly) but I am still intrigued by this beautiful pdf version of the screenplay featuring illustrations and shots from the movie.  Now to resist reading it until after I see the movie.

Oh Bulldogs, why are you so cute?  Just look at these 1905 pictures of Bulldogs in fancy dress.  I'd also  like to take this moment to apologize to my future outfit wearing dogs.  It'll be the internet's fault.

Timothy Leo Taranto has created some really great literary puns using the names of authors.  My favourites are Ernest Lemingway and DF Wallace and Grommit.  Oh and the Brontesaurus Sisters.

Look at these awesome Adventure Time crests by Mr.Caput on Tumblr.  So, so cool.

And lastly, my new favourite tumblr Pokemon and Fashion.  The creator adds Pokemon images to high fashion photos and the results are really great.

Seen anything you like recently?  Feel free to share in the comments:)

Things I Love #21

Is it just me or does it seem that the remainder of this year is filling up super fast?  I feel like I often mention how fast the year is going when I do these posts but they do make me unusually aware of the passage of time!  November has but two weeks left and then we will be full on into the Christmas madness.  I just hope we get some good weather somewhere in between all that because aside from a few sunny days, Summer is yet to visit Durban.  On that note, here is Things I Love #21:

If you don't already watch Adventure Time, here are 21 reasons why you should.  Man I love this show!!

Reaon # 2:  Finn has better hair than you

Do you dream of brightly coloured hair like I do?  Yes?  Then check out the Dolls with Dye tumblr.  I am thinking of dying mine bright red, at least I can get away with that for work....

I am not really a cat person but the 25 most awkward cat sleeping positions makes me wish I was a cat. Then, I could sleep ANYWHERE!

Dear universe, please, please, PLEASE can I get a shark sleeping bag?

Edgar Allen Po!  An unlikely combination of horror/crime fiction and the Teletubbies:

Here are 20 hilariously bizarre tumblr coincidences.  Seriously going to have to keep a look out for these in my own tumblr feed.

Birds are truly amazing creatures.  This article talks about how they manage to survive in hardcore storms like Sandy.

I'd LOVE to get my hands on the Rising Sun Lamp by Satoshi Itasaka.  The designer wanted the lamp to "create brand new feeling and optimism every time the user switches it on."  So cool!

It seems that in many ways this year has been about letting go and moving on.  Here are 9 reason why it's time to move on

This Star Wars Han Solo Princess Leia Geek Necklace from the Land of Rapture Etsy store is officially on my Christmas list.

Look at my new cat shoes from Mr Price!  Like I said, not a cat person but really, who can resist cat shoes:

The Forever 21 Hello Kitty range is just too cool.  I pretty much want everything in the lookbook!  It's a pity we don't have Forever 21 in SA yet.

Have you guys heard of the Morning Glory Pool?  It's kind a sad story...it was originally a really beautiful blue colour (caused by bacteria that lived in the warm water) but, because people have been throwing rubbish into it, it now has rings of orange and green (caused by different kinds of bacteria).  It's still really stunning to look at but the reasons why are a little depressing...

The Jim Bob Art Etsy store make some really great, quirky ceramics (among other things).  My favourites are the Cheese Defender Plate and the Handsome One Espresso Cups.

Here are four airplanes with mustaches to celebrate Movember...makes me want to break out my mustache ring so I can take part too.

I went off work early the other day because I was feeling sickly and I have to report that Totoro and popcorn are an effective cure for headaches:

These photos by Helen Pynor are absolutely stunning.  Everything looks like its floating underwater making it both tranquil and creepy all at the same time.

I know this is a bit delayed but have you seen/played Angry Birds Star Wars yet?  Here's the trailer just in case:

They always say that war changes people and these pictures of soldiers before, during and after deployment to Afghanistan are quite amazing.  Some are more dramatic than others to the point where it's hard to imagine it's the same person!!

Pictures of eyes drawn on hands.  Kind of creepy (a la the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth) but also kind of cool.

And lastly, how cool is this dog?  His name is Jeffery and he lives on the same property as the hair salon we go to. Yesterday when we went for a cut all he wanted was love and I was more than happy to oblige...

And that's all for this week.  If you've found anything cool feel free to share it in the comments.  I am off to attempt to bake bran muffins from a box.  I am hopeless in the kitchen!  Wish me luck!!

P.S.  I finally finished my Links I love page.  Click here to check it out.

Tag, You're It!

The other day Mandy from Chocolate and Cream Cake tagged me in one of those question and answer posts.  I love this kind of thing so here's my response:

First up, the rules:

1. You must post the rules.
2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post.
3. Create eight new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
4. Tag eight people with a link to your post.
5. Let them know they’ve been tagged.

Next, my answers:

What's the best gift you've ever received?
This is a tough one so I will give you my top 3:  the ring my mom and dad gave me when I turned 18, the tattoo voucher that Jason gave me which paid for my first big tattoo and finally, the double-bed quilt I got for my 21st birthday; handmade by my mom and paid for by my grandparents.

What book are you most looking forward to being released?
Oooh, I don't really know about this one.  I'm really keen to read Salman Rushdie's memoir Joseph Anton and NW by Zadie Smith but both of those have already been released.

If you had the superpower that allowed you to shapeshift into an animal—but it could only be one animal—which animal would you choose?
It's funny because when I get asked this question, I always try to think of an animal that has little chance of being eaten in which case I'd have to choose a Great White Shark.  Not a practical choice though because I'd have to be in water for it to work otherwise I'd just be a giant fish flapping about.  More realistically then, it would probably be a bird of some sort.

What cancelled TV show would you most like to see rebooted?
I'd LOVE to see Invader Zim make a comeback at some point.  One of my favourite cartoons ever!

What's your dream vehicle?
Maybe I am aiming too low here but right now my dream vehicle is a powder blue Citroen DS3.  There is one parked just down the road from us and I drool over it every morning...

Would you rather travel forward in time or backward?
Definitely forward.  When I was small we used to watch a show called Beyond 2000 which was full of flying cars, robots and other futuristic goodness.  I'd like to see that stuff in real life!

What is your favorite shape or pattern?
Do skulls count?  In which case it's definitely skulls followed closely by anchors, stripes and damask.

If you could trade places for one week with a famous (or quasi-famous) person, who would you choose and why?
Another tough one but I'd probably pick Christiane Amanpour.  Back when I was obsessed with the idea of becoming a war correspondent she was my idol and, although that life doesn't interest me anymore, it would still be cool to try it out for a week.

And now, my 8 questions:

1. What is the one book you could read over and over again?
2. Which season is your favourite and why?
3. If you could pick only one place (anywhere in the world) to live for the rest of your life, where would it be?
4. In a fight between Darth Vader and Magneto, who do you think would win?
5. Who is your favourite Adventure Time character? If you don't watch Adventure Time, who is your favourite animated character?
6. Which band would you most like to see live?
7. What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
8. Who is your favourite villian?  Movie, comic book or tv?

Now the thing is, I don't actually know 8 bloggers so I tag Peppa-Jo and anyone else who might be interested to play along.  Enjoy!
